Band ini dibentuk oleh Michael Pitt yg seorang aktor sekaligus musisi bersama Ryan Donowho pada tahun 2001 - yang sebenarnya adalah side project Michael Pitt - . lalu Kristen Zucconi masuk mengisi posisi bassis. Pagoda adalah band indie rock / post-grunge dari Brooklyn, New York.
secara garis besar pengaruh warna musik band ini antara lain terinfluence oleh band-band seperti Sonic Youth, Nirvana, PJ Harvey dan The Pixies.
khusus Nirvana, bagi Michael Pitt adalah influence terbesarnya yg sangat mempengaruhi Pitt dalam bermusik, suara parau yg dimilikinya merefleksikan Band ini dapat disebut bergenre post-grunge. Pitt juga sangat mengaggumi musik gnawa - musik campuran dari sub-Sahara Afrika, dan lagu-lagu kepercayaan orang Arab dan ritme-, dia terinspirasi musik gnawa dari perjalanannya ke Maroko dimana saat pitt tumbuh sebagai musisi dengan musik itu. Dengan formasi / personel awal tersebut Pagoda membuat rekaman debut mereka dengan lagu "muskrat" di soundtrack untuk film The Heart is Deceitful Above All Things.
